Australian Institute for Machine Learning

Job Position: Research Engineering Team Lead, AI/ML

Location: Melbourne, Australia

Who We Are:

Lockheed Martin Australia is a dynamic, growing, and energetic organisation offering stimulating, challenging work at the forefront of advanced technology.

The Science, Technology, Engineering Leadership, and Research Laboratory (STELaRLab) is our national research and development operations centre, and Lockheed Martin’s first non-US based, multidisciplinary R&D laboratory.  It is headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, with research teams also located in Adelaide and Brisbane.

What We Do:

STELaRLab undertakes R&D into information-related technologies – artificial intelligence, machine learning, analytics, image and signal processing, tracking & sensor fusion, and complex optimisation.  We apply those skills to a diverse range of areas including space situational awareness, space operations, multi-domain operational analysis, all-source information fusion, automated information extraction and interpretation, and hypersonics.

Who We Need:

In this newly established role of Research Engineering Lead (AI/ML), you will have responsibility for leading STELaRLab’s R&D in the areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML).

The successful applicant will have well-developed computer science skills and a strong record of achievement in one or more relevant areas, such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, image or signal processing, natural language processing, computer science, or data analytics. You will develop and lead STELaRLab’s collaborations with Universities, Defence, and the National Security communities in AI/ML projects. Under your mentorship, you will provide inspiration and guidance for STELaRLab’s cadre of Honours, Masters, and PhD students, as well as our own staff.

It is a requirement of the position that the successful applicant be eligible for an Australian security clearance.

Position: Post Doc – Deep Reasoning

The Lockheed Martin Science, Technology, Engineering Leadership, and Research Laboratory (STELaRLab) seeks to support several post-doctoral positions in the area of Deep Reasoning – the integration of symbolic information with data-driven machine learning techniques.  Deep Reasoning will be key to realizing the next generation of artificial intelligence systems that are capable of safely adapting their behaviours when confronted with dynamic or uncertain situations.

The positions will be located in the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) at the University of Adelaide.  Led by Prof. Anton van den Hengel, AIML is Australia’s largest machine learning group.  AIML ranks third in the world in the number of publications in the top international conferences over the last decade in computer vision (www.csrankings.org), and has held the top position on many of the major benchmarks in computer vision including Microsoft COCO, VQA 2, Cityscapes, PASCAL VOC, and ImageNet Scene Parsing.

As an alternative to offering a typical one or two year post-doctoral contract, successful candidates will also be offered an option to be engaged as full-time employees of STELaRLab, but commencing their career with a multi-year work assignment as a full-time post-doctoral integree to the AIML.  The successful candidate will transition from the post-doctoral role to a full-time employee role after the agreed period, but will retain close and ongoing links with the AIML team.

The successful candidate will have strong programming skills, and significant experience in one or more of: machine learning, artificial intelligence, advanced sensor processing, data analytics, or Bayesian analysis.

You work well in teams, have a strong drive to solve complex problems, an ability to integrate disparate concepts from interdisciplinary colleagues, and want to make a real-world difference.

It is a requirement of the position that the successful applicant be eligible for an Australian security clearance.
